History

Mother’z Boyzz is a rock band from Cologne, which has its roots a.o. in Blues, Southern Rock and hard Classic Rock.

The actual lineup is:

Wolfgang Schmidder (Guitars & Vocals), Friedel Holler (Bass), Lutz Meißner (Hammond & Keyboards) and Christian Verhalen (Drums)

Originally (2011) Mother'z Boyzz was founded as a pure fun project by Wolfgang Schmidder. In the loose line-up initially friends and also Wolfgang's current wife played along.

They first rearranged some songs Schmidder's former Heavy Rock-Band Mirror Black and gave them a bluesier touch and played the first gig… unplugged. The response was so positive that they decided to replace occasional sessions with regular rehearsals.

The first bigger events followed. The band was also the godfather of the "Niehler Bluesnight". Further appearances in music pubs and clubs followed. At this time still with guest musicians on the bass, because the acoustic guitars were still in the foreground. So for a while they played in different lineups, but a short time later they had to get an electric bass and Jupp Hessel, whom they from various events, was engaged.

In March 2017 Christian Verhalen joined the band as a new drummer, which now performed as a trio. With this line-up, a great consistency emerged and the first CD "Bad Boy Blues" was released in early 2018. Subsequently, some major gigs, including in Cologne's MTC, Blue Shell and in the Kulturfabrik Krefeld, with the Vargas Blues Band (feat. Jon Jagger), were already very successfully contested.

In the fall of 2019, the recordings for the second CD "Pink Cadillac" began. For this, the band got support and arranged the songs partly with keyboards and the "Fabulous Be Gee Bees" as a background choir. The girls have also been on board live since then....

The guys realized that the sound of Hammond organ and piano not only fits well into the musical concept of the band, but is even an enrichment.

When Hessel decided to leave the band for personal reasons in April 2020, Volker Szesni took his place at short notice and played bass and keyboards in a double function until a new bass player and also keyboard player was found.

Since June 2020 Friedel Holler is now on bass and since June 2021 Lutz Meißner on Hammond and keyboards, so that the 4-men-trio is complete again...

The successful live debut of this line-up took place on July, 30th 2021 at an open air in the Cologne cult institution "Die Kantine". Further gigs in and around Cologne followed.

In spring 2023, this line-up began recording the 3rd album "Slutmachine". This album was completed in the summer and officially released in September 2023 via the M2 Music label.

Further concerts are now being planned for 2024; we will keep you posted.

Mother’z Boyzz sind ein Bluesrock-Powertrio aus Köln, bestehend aus dem Gitarristen und Sänger Wolfgang Schmidder, dem Bassisten Friedel Holler, dem Keyboarder Lutz Meißner sowie dem Drummer Christian Verhalen.

Ursprünglich wurde Mother’z Boyzz als reines Spaßprojekt von Wolfgang Schmidder gegründet. In der losen Besetzung spielten zunächst Freunde und sogar Wollis heutige Frau mit.

Man arrangierte zunächst einige Songs aus Schmidders Zeit bei der Heavy-Rockband Mirror Black um und gab ihnen einen bluesigeren Touch und spielte den ersten Gig noch unplugged. Die Resonanz war derart positiv, dass man entschied, gelegentliche Sessions durch regelmäßige Proben zu ersetzen.

Es folgten erste größere Events. So stand die Band auch Pate für die inzwischen bekannte „Niehler Bluesnacht“. Weitere Auftritte in Musikkneipen und in Clubs folgten. Zu dieser Zeit noch mit Gastmusikern am Bass, da die akustischen Gitarren noch im Vordergrund standen. So wurde eine Zeitlang in verschiedenen Besetzungen gespielt, Kurze Zeit später musste dann doch ein E-Bass her und Jupp Hessel, den man von verschiedenen Events her kannten, wurde verpflichtet.

Im März 2017 stieß Christian Verhalen als neuer Schlagzeuger zur Band, die nun als Trio auftrat. Mit dieser Besetzung zeichnet sich eine große Konstanz ab und die erste CD "Bad Boy Blues" kam Anfang 2018 auf den Markt. In der Folge wurden bereits einige größere Gigs u.a. im Kölner MTC, Blue Shell und in der Kulturfabrik Krefeld, mit der Vargas Blues Band (feat. Jon Jagger), sehr erfolgreich bestritten.

Im Herbst 2019 begannen dann die Aufnahmen zur zweiten CD „Pink Cadillac“. Dazu holte sich die Band Unterstützung und arrangierte die Songs teilweise mit Keyboards und den "Fabulous Be Gee Bees" als Backgroundchor. Auch live sind die Mädels seitdem mit an Bord…

Die Jungs stellten fest, dass sich der Sound von Hammond-Orgel und Piano nicht nur gut in das musikalische Konzept der Band einfügt, sondern sogar eine Bereicherung darstellt.

Als Hessel sich aus persönlichen Gründen entschlossen hat, die Band im April 2020 zu verlassen, übernahm Volker Szesni kurzfristig seinen Platz und spielt in einer Doppelfunktion solange Bass und Keyboards, bis ein neuer Bassist und auch Keyboarder gefunden war.

Seit Juni 2020 ist nun Friedel Holler am Bass und seit Juni 2021 Lutz Meißner an Hammond und Keyboards dabei, so dass das 4-Mann-Trio damit wieder komplett ist...

Das erfolgreiche Live-Debut dieser Besetzung fand am 30.07.2021 bei einem Open Air in der Kölner Kult-Institution „die Kantine“ statt. Es folgten einige weitere Auftritte in Köln und Umgebung.

Im Frühjahr 2023 wurde dann in dieser Besetzung mit den Aufnahmen für das 3. Album „Slutmachine“ begonnen. Dieses Album wurde im Sommer fertig gestellt und im September 2023 über das Label M2 Music offiziell veröffentlicht.

Für das 2024 sind nun weitere Konzerte in Planung, konkrete Termine werden wir bekanntgeben.
